Below is a link to my submissions to r/DataIsBeautiful’s monthly DataViz battle. For June, the data set r/DataIsBeautiful is the World Happiness Report. I specifically decided to look at South America. What led me to look at South America was Venezuela. In terms of happiness score, the country fell significantly from 2015 to 2017. The country has really fallen into crisis contrasted with Chile which saw improvements and became the happiest country in South America in 2017.
I tried a few new things with this dashboard. I made a bump chart, my first one ever. I find bump charts interesting they show how rankings change over time. In this case, the bump chart shows how the countries’ rankings changed from 2015 to 2017. At first, I built the bump chart with all the countries, and that looked ridiculous. I was only looking at data for the years 2015, 2016, and 2017. But I could imagine a bump chart begins to look dumb if say this data had 10 years worth of data instead of three. There is certainly a time and place for the bump chart.
I also experimented with some minor Tableau features. I created an action that highlights countries across the two visualizations. I also dabbled with a background color. I am not a designer, so implementing a background color brings me a fair amount of stress. But I like the way the light green looks.
I think it’s a nice little Viz that gets its point across.
